Greenbriar Children's Center to Participate in Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Nov. 5th-6th

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Friday, September 23rd, 2016

Greenbriar Children’s Center will again join in the fast-paced action this fall by fielding a Savannah Rock n’ Roll Marathon fundraising group for a sixth year. The Rock n’ Roll Marathon, slated for Nov. 5-6, 2016, will feature several events, including a full marathon, half-marathon, relay and various shorter races.

Rock n’ Roll runners can choose from five distances. The starting line for the marathon, half-marathon and relay races will be at Bay and Bull streets; the courses end in Forsyth Park. All three races begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5. As part of the marathon festivities, Grammy award-winning band Old Crow Medicine Show will headline a free concert in Forsyth Park. At 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, the 5K and one-mile races will start at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively, at Daffin Park.

Greenbriar has been involved with The Rock n’ Roll Marathon since the race first came to Savannah in 2010. The Children’s Center had a team of 20, including Greenbriar staffers and board members, principals and teachers from the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, as well as teachers, students and staff from South University, who participated the first year raising $15,000.

Greenbriar Executive Director Gena Taylor expects that her organization’s team will draw quite a few participants this year, and she’s grateful for all of them. She’s also quick to remind interested individuals that those who pledge to help Greenbriar don’t have to be from Savannah.

“Greenbriar is very proud of our team members from the past five years and the funds they have raised. We also encourage people from outside of Savannah to join our team. Anyone who already plans to run the race and is thinking they’d like their efforts to help fund a charitable cause should get in touch with us. It won’t cost them any additional money, and they’ll be supporting area children and families in need,” Taylor said.

Greenbriar will cover the race registration fee for team members who raise a specific amount of money through securing pledges. Team members must reach a fundraising requirement of $500 to have their registration fee paid for the full marathon, half marathon, or relay race. The fundraising requirement to have registration fees paid for the 5K or one-mile race will be $200. Greenbriar’s overall fundraising goal this year is $15,000.

To make fundraising easier and more efficient, team members’ families and friends will be able to support them and contribute through their online donor/fundraising page.
