Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Tuesday, February 21st, 2017

The Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home is pleased to announce the line-up for the 2017 Spring Lecture Series. All events are free and open to the public.

The lectures take place at 4 p.m. in the parlor of the Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home, located at 207 E. Charlton Street on Lafayette Square in downtown Savannah. The spring schedule is as follows:

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 26
Frank Brannon – “Flannery’s Waltz”
Atlanta singer/songwriter Frank Brannon, a cousin of Flannery O’Connor who recorded the critically-acclaimed album Dance on the Wind, will discuss his familial ties to Flannery and how his music and writing has been influenced by her work. He will provide insight into his love of words, storytelling and spirituality and will discuss what made Flannery tick. Brannon will incorporate a number of songs into his lecture.

SUNDAY, MARCH 12
Zach Powers – “Writing Out of Savannah: How Hometowns Shape Fiction Set in Other Places”
Author and Savannah native Zach Powers, the author of Gravity Changes and co-founder of Seersucker Live, will reflect upon why his hometown never served as a setting for any of his fiction, even though its influence crept into nearly every story he’s written. Powers will talk about Savannah’s influence and will compare his experience to writers such as Flannery O’Connor, exploring how personal roots play a role in an author’s writing and worldview.

SUNDAY, APRIL 9
Daniel Moran – “Creating Flannery O’Connor”
Daniel Moran, a professor of History at Monmouth University, is the author of Creating Flannery O’Connor: Her Critics, Her Editors, Her Readers (University of Georgia Press, 2016), which examines how literary reputations are made and the factors that contribute to the evolution of a cultural icon. Moran will discuss how Flannery’s reputation was formed and will share ideas about how readers, publishers, filmmakers and others affect an author's reputation.

SUNDAY, MAY 28
Iridescent Quill – “The Power of Storytelling”
Members of the Flannery O'Connor Childhood Home Peacock Guild Writer's Salon, a talented group of local authors, will share original writing, carrying Flannery’s rich tradition of storytelling into the 21st century. Don’t miss the chance to hear from some of Savannah’s emerging and established writers.
