Savannah State University will host its 66th annual Southern Regional Press Institute on February 23 and 24, 2017, on campus. SRPI is a two-day mass media conference primarily for college students from the Southeast.  A few workshops are offered for high school, middle and elementary school students who are involved in student media in their schools.

The theme for the 66th SRPI is “Crisis Communication: Ethics and Accuracy in a Digital World.” Michael Ottey, freelance journalist and a former editor for China Daily, will bring the opening address on Thursday, February 23, 9 a.m., in the Student Union ballroom. His presentation is sponsored by the Confucius Institute at SSU.

Ernie Suggs, race and culture reporter, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, will bring the address at the Milledge-Owens Awards Luncheon on Friday, February 24, 11:30 a.m., in the Student Union ballroom.

Workshops in photography, writing for multiple platforms, news, magazine and feature writing, new media, copy editing, headline writing, broadcasting, public relations, advertising, and newspaper layout and design are instructed by media professionals and journalism educators from across the nation.

Additionally, the SRPI Job and Internship Fair will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2:30 – 5:30 p.m. in Adams Hall. Local and national media companies will interview mass communications students who desire internships or permanent employment.
