The Historic SCHOONER ROSEWAY Visits Savannah

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Monday, March 27th, 2017

On Wednesday, the National Historic Landmark Schooner Roseway will arrive in Savannah after a ten-day sailing voyage from St Croix, Virgin Islands. As part of the annual northbound journey that Roseway makes from the Caribbean to it’s summer home port of Boston, Savannah is the chosen stopover point where the ship will re-fuel, provision, and give the crew a few days of R&R.

This stop is also a special visit for World Ocean School, owner and operator of the schooner, as they consider relocation for the 15-year-old non profit educational organization, presently located in Boston. Weighing two other locations, along with Savannah, the organization has been in discussions with local schools, community members, and business people to determine if Savannah is the right place for relocation of the its administrative offices.

From 2010-2012 World Ocean School operated the schooner Roseway from the Westin Savannah Harbor dock, generously donated to the school by the hotel, for three shoulder seasons, serving hundreds of local students in its academically-driven experiential education programs. Having built strong relationships with the community during those years, Savannah is near and dear to the organization, making it strong contender in the relocation search.

Savannah Harbor Foundation’s President, Mark Spadoni, has been working with World Ocean School over the past few months in helping them gather information for their relocation decisions.

“I have been impressed with the work that World Ocean School has done both locally and in other locations,” said Spadoni. “The kids they touch in many cases have been profoundly impacted in a positive way. I know Savannah would benefit from a closer relationship with them including making our community their new home.”

“As a mission-driven organization that believes strongly in effective community-building, we are thrilled to be revisiting Savannah—this time as a possible permanent home for our offices”, says Abby Kidder, President of the World Ocean School.

On Wednesday, March 29 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, Kidder will host an “Open Boat” aboard Roseway at the Westin Savannah Harbor dock, where she hopes any and all community members will come and meet her staff, see the ship, ask questions, and share insights about World Ocean School’s possible relocation.
