Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Join the Savannah Philharmonic as they conclude the 2016/2017 season in resounding fashion with the spectacular Season Finale: Rachmaninoff & Dvořák, an evening of fantastically gorgeous music, Saturday, April 29, 7:30 pm at the Johnny Mercer Theater, 301 W Oglethorpe Avenue in downtown Savannah. Dazzling pianist Fanya Lin returns to perform Rachmaninoff’s daunting and astoundingly beautiful Third Piano Concerto, and the evening concludes with Dvořák’s lusciously melodic and magical Symphony No. 8.

Fanya Lin, born in Taiwan, began formal piano study at age four. She has been selected as a top prize-winner in piano competitions such as Seattle International Piano Competition, New York International Piano Competition, and Beethoven Club International Piano Competition. In addition to the Savannah Philharmonic, her orchestral appearances in the U.S. include the Utah Symphony, Coeur d’Alene Symphony Orchestra, Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra, and Aurora Symphony Orchestra. Lin graduated from the Julliard School with a master’s degree and is currently a doctoral student at the University of Minnesota.

“Though ‘The New World’ is clearly Dvořák’s best known symphony, both 7 and 8 are my personal favorites,” says Savannah Philharmonic Artistic Director and Conductor Peter Shannon. “The 8th, which we will play in this concert, has one of the most moving slow movements of any symphony. The drama and thrill of the outer movements will see the Philharmonic in flying form. I'm excited to be a part of this. Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano concerto is nothing short of epic. Pianist Fan Ya Lin had me speechless when I first heard her play; and it's hard to silence an Irishman! She is music personified and I am amazed at her talent and energy. I can guarantee you this: she will have the audience on their feet with shouts of ‘bravo’ the second she stops playing. I can't think of a better way to end the season!”

The day before the concert, on Friday April 28th, over 600 students from Savannah area schools will attend a presentation and a Savannah Philharmonic rehearsal, as Peter Shannon and the Philharmonic’s musicians prepare for the Season Finale. The students have received study materials in advance, and Philharmonic musicians have visited many of these students in their schools, in our Orchestra Lab Masterclass program. The Savannah Philharmonic’s Orchestra Lab programs are supported by major funding from the City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs, and we are deeply grateful for their support.

Tickets for the Savannah Philharmonic’s Finale concert cost $16-75 and can be purchased by visiting www.savannahboxoffice.com.
