Savannah Friends of Music Awards $50,000 in Grants, Scholarships

Savannah Friends of Music celebrated 14 years of supporting, sponsoring and promoting classical music and music education by awarding $35,000 in grants to major area nonprofit music organizations and schools during its annual meeting in this month.

Requests for funding exceeded $70,000. The following received funding: Armstrong Youth Orchestra, Savannah Voice Festival, Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra, Savannah Music Festival, American Traditions Competition, Esther F. Garrison School for the Arts, Savannah Children’s Choir, Savannah Classical Academy, RISE Chorale, and SONATA.

Allocations Committee Members were Marilyn Sheridan, chair; Raymond Patricio, president, and Lynne Davis, fundraising. With these allocations, SFOM has now raised and distributed $900,000.

In addition, Education Director John Canarina announced the winners of SFOM scholarships for summer music camp. Daniel Speal will study trumpet and piano at the Auburn University Summer Band Camp. Three students have been accepted at the University of Georgia Summer Music Institute:  Savannah Arts Academy students Carter Bridges, trumpet and piano; and Kara Harper, trumpet. Niamh Kavanagh, bassoonist, attends South Effingham High School.  Scholarships for private music lessons for the Armstrong Youth Orchestra, piano and voice lessons and summer music camp total $15,000 for the school year 2016-17.
