Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Monday, January 22nd, 2018

The Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner’s Office announced the continuation of its smoke alarm program “Operation Safe Home” in Savannah, Georgia.

Deputy Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Jay Florence provided four dozen smoke alarms to
Savannah Fire & Emergency Services Fire Chief Charles Middleton to distribute to needy citizens in Savannah.

Through Operation Safe Home, the Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner’s Office provides free smoke alarms to fire departments for citizens who otherwise would not be able to purchase them. The smoke alarms are obtained at no cost to taxpayers; funds raised in the private sector are used to buy them.

Through Operation Safe Home, over 200,000 free smoke alarms have been donated to needy citizens.

“Most fire fatalities occur in the home, and most occur when people are sleeping,” Florence said.

“Having a smoke alarm in your home can mean the difference between life and death. In fact, statistics
consistently show that having a working smoke alarm in the house doubles your chance of getting out
alive."

Any individual or business interested in purchasing smoke alarms through the Operation Safe Home
Program for their local fire department to help needy residents may call the Insurance and Safety Fire
Commissioner’s Public Education Division at 800-656-2298.
