St. John’s Church to Walk Stations of the Cross March 30th

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Thursday, March 29th, 2018

On Good Friday, March 30, at 5:30 p.m.  (weather permitting) St. John’s Clergy and Parishioners will follow the ancient devotion called the Way of the Cross in procession around Madison Square, a public act of worship and witness.  Youth of St. John’s will read Scripture passages at each of the fourteen stations on the way that trace the way of Jesus from his agony in the garden of Gethsemane to his burial in the tomb.

Since ancient times, pilgrims to Jerusalem on Good Friday have followed the way Jesus walked to the cross and tomb, with “stations” (stopping-places) to mark significant events along this way.  That’s the origin of the ancient devotion called “the way of the cross” or “the stations of the cross” which can be done at any time and at any place throughout the world.  In thought and spirit, those making the devotion are transported to Jerusalem.

The public is invited to take part.  The procession begins at the arches on the north side of St. John’s Church, concludes with closing prayers in the church itself, and lasts about 45 minutes.  Parking is available in the church parking lot on the west side of Whitaker Street, one block south of Liberty.  St. John’s Church is at 325 Bull Street on Madison Square.
