American Traditions Vocal Competition’s Nat Zegree to Host Tybee Holiday Concert

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Friday, December 7th, 2018

The American Traditions Vocal Competition will continue its series on Tybee Island on Sunday, Dec. 16 with Nat Zegree’s one-man show, “Fly More Than You Fall meets Sun Records.” The performance is slated for 3 p.m. at the Tybee Post Theatre, 10 Van Horne Ave. Tickets are $20 and premium tickets are $25.

“Fly More Than You Fall meets Sun Records” is an homage to not only Zegree’s songwriting genius, but also to the musical superstars who got their start at Sun Records – Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash.  Zegree’s pyrotechnic piano abilities have led to roles he’s now renowned for, such as his portrayal of Jerry Lee Lewis in the hit musical, Million Dollar Quartet, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Amadeus.  In addition to playing blindfolded, behind his back, and doing jump tricks around a piano, Zegree has a soulful tenor voice with an incredible high falsetto and writes dazzling songs from the heart. This concert, which will feature up-tempo Jerry Lee favorites, holiday classics and some original tunes, is not to be missed.

Nat Zegree is a born entertainer.  Gifted with an unbelievably precise musical ear, and trained with superior musicianship and an iconic sense of style, Nat can probably play and sing anything you would like to hear.  Coming from a family of musicians, his father Steve Zegree gave him the gift of Jazz, Funk, and Classical orchestrations, while his Mother, Kellee Love Haselton, introduced him to Pop, Rock, and Musical Theatre. Both of them together offered an endless encyclopedia of musical knowledge.

Nat has been nominated for several awards, largely for his performances as the quirky Jerry Lee Lewis in Million Dollar Quartet.  Nat has performed the role at Maine’s Ogunquit Playhouse the Regional TONY®-winning Paper Mill Playhouse (NJ), Flat Rock Playhouse (NC), and Riverside Theatre (FL).  In 2017, he returned to Flat Rock Playhouse to perform as W.A. Mozart in the musical, Amadeus. He has also been heard in Pasek and Paul’s new musical Dear Evan Hansen, winner of six TONY® awards, a GRAMMY® award, and a Daytime EMMY® award.  Other credits include: Henry (Next to Normal), Moritz (Spring Awakening), Scarecrow (The Wizard of Oz), Rocky (The Rocky Horror Show), Feste (12th Night), Flute (A Midsummer Nights Dream), and Ralph (Lord of the Flies.)  An avid writer and composer, Nat has written several musicals that are currently in development, both for stage and film, and he has also released a debut album, entitled Fly More Than You Fall.”

“There is a reason Nat won the People’s Choice Award at the 2018 American Traditions Vocal Competition. Nat is one of the most incredible musicians I have ever met.  He can compose, arrange, improvise, sing and melt your heart, all while performing piano tricks and telling stories.  He’s one of the most incredible entertainers I’ve ever watched,” said ATC Artistic Director Mikki Sodergren. “We are so thrilled to have him back in Savannah for this special performance at the Tybee Post Theater, marking our third and final collaborative concert in this series for 2018.”

The ATC celebrates and preserves all styles of classic American music. The 501(c)3 nonprofit organization promotes these songs by producing an annual vocal competition in Savannah that awards more than $35,000 in cash prizes annually. As part of community-driven service and initiative, the organization provides musical education, exposure and performances for Savannah locals of all ages. The annual vocal competition will take place from February 18-22, 2019.

The Tybee Post Theater is Tybee Island’s only performing arts and movie venue. The historic theater, set in the heart of the Fort Screven Historic District, was constructed as a movie house for the soldiers stationed at the Army base. After going dark in the mid-1960s, the curtain was raised for the first time in 50 years in September 2015, reborn as a performing arts and movie venue for Tybee residents and visitors alike. The Tybee Post Theater stands as a symbol of Tybee Island’s commitment to historic preservation and the value placed on cultural heritage.
