HistoricSavannah Foundation (HSF) announces a change of executive leadership at the 64-year-old non-profit organization. With mutual agreement, respect, and support, the Historic Savannah Foundation Board of Trustees and its President & CEO, Daniel Carey, have determined it’s time for a new leader. Daniel Carey will remain in his current position until September 17, 2019. A national search for his successor is being organized. Sue Adler, HSF’s Chief Mission Officer, has been named Interim Executive Director while Daniel Carey has agreed to help during this time of transition until his departure in September.

“For more than ten years, I’ve been fortunate to lead one of the premier preservation organizations in the country,” said Carey. “I’m grateful for the support I’ve received from the board and staff, and I’m proud of what we have accomplished over the last decade. HSF is a healthy and stable organization, and its role in helping shape Savannah’s future has never been more critical. I’m confident it will continue to thrive and serve this community.”

Carey was hired in December 2008 as the non-profit organization’s seventh director. Previously, he worked with the National Trust for Historic Preservation for nearly 18 years. During Carey’s tenure, HSF exercised its voice in advocating for protection of the National Historic Landmark District, shaping more sensitive preservation policies, and pushing for better tourism management. Its Revolving Fund was re-energized and creatively used to save nearly two dozen endangered historic buildings. The Davenport House Museum continued to distinguish itself as the place to visit to understand how the preservation movement began in Savannah in 1955.
