James E. McTeer II Brings Lowcountry Impressions to Flannery Home

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Monday, October 7th, 2019

The Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home (FOCCH) will welcome South Carolina author James E. McTeer, II, on Sunday, November 3, 2019, 4 p.m., 207 E. Charlton Street. McTeer’s book Minnow won the South Carolina First Novel Prize in 2015.

Minnow is an otherworldly story of a small boy who leaves his dying father’s bedside to hunt for a medicine to treat a mysterious illness. Sent by his mother to a local druggist in their seaside village, the child takes a dark and wondrous journey deep into the ancient Sea Islands, seeking the grave dust of a long-dead hoodoo man to buy a cure.

Minnow has gone on to win a regional Gold IPPY, received starred reviews from Kirkus and Library Journal, and was called a “fabulous tale” by Pat Conroy.

Born and raised in Beaufort, S.C., McTeer now lives in Columbia with his wife, infant son, and two dogs. He is the grandson of the late J. E. McTeer, whose thirty-seven years as High Sheriff of the Lowcountry (and local witch doctor) served as inspiration for Minnow.

This event is free and open to the public.
