Rashaun Inman from Valdosta, Ga., and Monte’yiona Jones from Alpharetta, Ga., each received the President’s Second Mile Award. The awards were announced at the 195th commencement ceremony for Savannah State University  (SSU) Dec. 14, 2019. The Second Mile Award, recognizes graduating seniors for remarkable leadership on campus and in the Savannah community.

“It is inspiring to see how involved our students are with making the world a better place,” said SSU Interim President Kimberly Ballard-Washington. “From offering a helping hand to a fellow student to organizing large-scale outreach efforts for national associations, I expect our students will continue to make a difference as they enter the workforce to begin their careers.”
 
Inman, a civil engineering technology major, participated on SSU’s campus with residential and housing departments, volunteered with spring break alternative programs and interned with Coca-Cola United. He organized a Red Cross blood drive on campus and set the record for most pints collected. Inman presented research on ground-penetrating radar and was named Savannah State University Man of the Year in 2018-19. He plans to become a licensed engineer and project manager.

Jones is a behavioral analysis major from Alpharetta, Ga. She made her mark by helping new students transition to college life. She also led numerous efforts to increase awareness of autism spectrum disorder on and off campus. Her knowledge and experience has led to a position as lead counselor at a day camp for children with mild disabilities.
