Family Promise of the Coastal Empire is rallying its volunteers to help with routine tasks and improvements around its three day centers in Savannah, Richmond Hill and Rincon. To get helpers back into the groove of things and focus their energy on specific tasks, Family Promise is starting two volunteer clubs that will be geared toward property beautification and small repairs and updates.

The first is a Handy Helpers Club. This group of volunteers will assist with small construction projects, such as painting, repairing doors and windows, putting together furniture and playsets, etc. The second group, a Garden Club, will help with sprucing up the property through small-scale landscaping and perhaps planting and maintaining a garden that Family Promise families can work in. 

“COVID-19 has kept many of our regular volunteers away for the past few months, and we completely understand that safety and health do come first. Repairs and small chores are beginning to stack up at our day centers, and we thought this would be an easy and fun way to draw previous volunteers back and entice a few new ones to get involved,” Family Promise Executive Director Katrina Bostick said. “And this way, people can focus on the tasks and jobs that truly interest them or that they have experience with. And with the pandemic affecting the community’s ability to give and support charities in the area, we could certainly use the volunteer help more than ever.”

Family Promise works with host congregations to reduce the number of families who are separated when they fall on difficult times and find themselves homeless. However, the organization expands its mission beyond just providing meals and shelter for families. They also offer mentoring, homelessness-prevention programs and services, and initiatives to address the underlying causes of homelessness. Family Promise has a strong track record in keeping families together, while offering support and resources towards long-term independence.
