Georgia Southern University to Offer Professional Human Resources Seminars

Georgia Southern University will offer Human Resources (HR) seminars at the Coastal Georgia Center, Savannah, Georgia and at HunterMaclean Brunswick, Brunswick, Georgia beginning in February and continuing throughout May, 2015. 

Upon completion of the Legal Awareness in the Workplace (LAW) seminar, attendees will receive 1.5 credit hours toward a Professional in Human Resources (PHR), Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), or Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR) re-certification that complies with the rules of the Human Resources Certification Institute.  

The fee is $59 for individuals and $55 each for four or more per firm. The course instructors are partner attorneys in the Savannah office of HunterMaclean and were included in The Best Lawyers in America 2015. 

Instructor Sarah Lamar will cover various Georgia employment law topics in LAW 108: Georgia Employment Law, to include the creation of at-will and contract employment, negligent supervision/retention of employees, defamation in the context of employment references, and workplace privacy.  The seminar will explore Georgia discrimination and compensation laws in light of their federal counterparts on Tuesday, Feb. 3 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Coastal Georgia Center.

Instructor Wade W. Herring will help participants develop an in-depth understanding of the intricacies of the Family and Medical Leave Act and how it affects their firm in LAW 127: Developing an In-Depth Understanding of the FMLA. Through the seminar, attendees will learn strategies for dealing with complicated employee leave issues. The seminar is on Tuesday, March 10, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at HunterMaclean Brunswick.

Attorney Shawn Kachmar will give a practical review of applicable statutes and regulations to help participants choose policies for their firms, and how to cover the risks and rules of social media in a work place setting in LAW 123: Social Media Use – What Employers Should Know. The seminar is on Tuesday April 21, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., at the Coastal Georgia Center.

Instructor Sarah Lamar will review every major HR step to ensure employees are processed legally and treated fairly in LAW 122: From Hiring to Termination – Effective Employee Management. Lamar will also teach how to follow pre-hire procedures, handle discipline issues, investigate employees’ at-work accidents, deal with harassment claims and properly process discharging employees. The seminar is on Tuesday May 19, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at HunterMaclean Brunswick.
