I-75 Central Corridor Coalition Applauds Senator Ossoff for Historic Investment in Passenger Rail

Monday, March 14th, 2022

The I-75 Central Corridor Coalition applauds the passage of the omnibus  appropriations bill in the United States Senate last night. This legislation includes a historic investment of  $8 million to initiate a Tier 1 Environmental Impact Study and prepare a Service Development Plan for  passenger rail service between Atlanta, Macon, and Savannah. By undertaking this investment, millions  of Georgians will be closer to opportunities for good-paying jobs, tourism, and an efficient, modern  transportation system that connects the state.

This investment would not have been possible if not for the support and partnership of Georgia’s  Congressional Delegation, led by Senator Jon Ossoff, who secured the funding dedicated to this important  project in the Fiscal Year 22 appropriation process. Greg Tapley, Chairman of the I-75 Central Corridor  Coalition and Chairman of Monroe County Board of Commissioners stated, “We believe this will be a  significant investment in rural counties in the I-75 Corridor. It will help economic development, freight, and passenger mobility and relieve the congestion in one of the busiest corridors in Georgia.” Mayor of  Stockbridge, Anthony Ford, who serves as Vice-Chairman of the Coalition added, “Senator Ossoff deserves  our thanks for delivering a project that will help all Georgians connect to new opportunities and help all  the citizens of the I-75 Corridor move more efficiently and safely.”

The I-75 Central Corridor Coalition is a 501(c)6 organization, incorporated in 2018. Membership in the  Coalition consists of 19 local elected officials and community economic development partners from seven  counties. The mission of the I-75 Central Corridor Coalition is to serve as a forum for planning and  discussion on future growth and development within the corridor. The Coalition aims to advance smart  growth within the corridor as a center of economic prosperity for Georgia in the 21st Century.
