Visit Savannah Celebrates Global Meetings Industry Day, Spotlighting Economic Impact & Community Growth

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Friday, April 12th, 2024

Yesterday, Visit Savannah joined the annual worldwide recognition of Global Meetings Industry Day and champion the benefits and impact of professional meetings and events held in Savannah and Chatham County.

GMID, fueled by the U.S. Travel Association's Meetings Mean Business Coalition, spotlights the proven value that business meetings, conferences, conventions, trade shows, and exhibitions bring to businesses, workers, and the economy.

The Meetings Matter theme highlights the economic contributions and significance of face-to-face meetings, emphasizing the many benefits that professional in-person gatherings create.

The meetings industry generates billions in travel spending and directly supports hundreds of thousands of jobs in the United States annually. These revenue and employment opportunities are critical to the success of local economies like Savannah's, where annually, meeting industry events account for over $300 million in visitor spending in our community.

"At Visit Savannah, we're proud to join the celebration of Global Meetings Industry Day on April 11," says Joseph Marinelli, President and CEO of Visit Savannah. "The Meetings Matter theme perfectly captures what we strive for – fostering connections and generating positive economic impact throughout the community. Meetings and events aren't just gatherings; they're economic engines that drive hundreds of millions of dollars in visitor spending and support countless jobs for our families, friends, and neighbors in Savannah. It's a win-win for local businesses, convention attendees, their organizations, and our entire community."
