Tobia Makover presents Nakazora: the space between Sky and Earth at Jepson Cafe at Jepson Center for the Arts May 19th through November 27th.

Nakazora is a Buddhist term that holds multiple meanings, including "the space between sky and earth. It can also refer to a state when the feet do not touch the ground; the center of the sky or the zenith or celestial peak.”

“Nakazora was a term I’ve been familiar with for a long time. It really resonates with me and my process. The idea of immortalizing an individual’s memories and families throughout life, death and and everywhere in between is at the heart of each piece. Though my work is introspective, the emotions and life experiences that I have are universal. With this show I hope to humanize these universal experiences and connect with the viewer’s emotions as they explore the spaces in between”.

Makover, both a graduate of American University in Washington D.C. and the Savannah College of Art and Design, creates two and three dimensional fine art which encompasses photography, encaustic painting and multiple age-old processes, materials and techniques. The Jepson installation will act, as her work does, as a guide along a timeless pathway, encouraging each viewer to stop and look inwardly.

A firm believer that an image acts as a single note in an ever-expanding symphony, Makover continues to traverse installation. She examines the deeper movement of time and breaking down barriers with a single image. By creating large multi-dimensional installments, she pushes the boundaries of photography and creates a full experience of how the mind explores memories.

The exhibition is part of #art912, Telfair’s outreach to local artists in Savannah to showcase their work on a museum level scale. Stephanie Reines, Interpretation and Audience Engagement Coordinator for Telfair, is the one of the driving forces behind the #art912 program.

“#art912 is a series of programs at Telfair Museums and throughout Savannah designed to highlight the work of contemporary local artists. Inspired by ‘State of the Art: Discovering American Art Now’ currently on view at the Jepson Center, #art912 hopes to engage and support artists on a local level.”

A reception for the exhibition as well as an artist talk will be announced soon.
