Empire Construction, Rape Crisis Center Partner for 'Student Safety Night'

Empire Construction is proud to sponsor Savannah’s local “Student Safety Night” to benefit the Rape Crisis Center of the Coastal Empire. The free, drop in-style event will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, April 13 at 309 W 36th St. in downtown Savannah.  The venue has been renovated by Empire Construction and is designed as student housing.

Students, parents and area residents concerned with youth safety are invited to this free community event, which will focus on student protection and avoiding potentially vulnerable situations. This evening will feature free appetizers, beer and wine while supplies last (guests requesting alcohol will be asked for ID), safety tips from a Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Officer, proper weapons handling and guidelines from a former federal law enforcement officer/NRA instructor, as well as information and hand-outs from a Rape Crisis Center representative. Moon River Brewing Company is donating the beer for the fundraiser.

Raffle tickets will be available for $5 each or five tickets for $20 with all proceeds benefitting the Rape Crisis Center. Raffle prizes include many items donated by local businesses and organizations, such as Milan Day Spa gift certificate, two tickets to a Savannah Philharmonic concert and various restaurant gift cards. Donations for the Rape Crisis Center will be accepted a. the event.

“We are really looking forward to hosting this event with Empire Construction and increasing awareness of such an important topic as student safety,” said Rape Crisis Center Executive Director Kesha Gibson-Carter. “Empire Construction has partnered with our organization this April which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Savannah is home to many students and it is vital that students are equipped with safety tips, self-defense techniques and other information they will learn at this event, providing their parents and guardians with the peace of mind that if a dangerous situation were to arise, their child will be prepared.”

The Rape Crisis Center was established in August 1975 when the first group of volunteers opened a telephone crisis line. Decades later, the center has evolved into a comprehensive agency serving Savannah and the surrounding area. The Rape Crisis Center provides resources and advocacy to victims of rape and sexual assault, and prevention education to youth and adults. The center’s services and programs include a 24-hour crisis line, hospital accompaniment, survivor groups, help going to court and reporting to the police, and bullying prevention education, as well as elementary, middle and high school programs.
