Taylor Riner of Statesboro has been chosen to represent Ogeechee Technical College at the EAGLE (Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education) Leadership Institute to be held in Atlanta in March 2018. The Leadership Institute, a two-day event, not only recognizes and honors students who have demonstrated superior achievement in adult education classes and programs, but also provides them with sessions to develop leadership skills.

Taylor, who attends Adult Education classes held at the Statesboro Regional Library, was nominated by her instructor, Julie Strickland. Strickland said, “In the time that I have known Taylor, I have seen her begin to blossom from a timid, socially-awkward teen into a self-aware young woman. She excels in class due to her dedication and studies; asks direct and insightful questions; requests additional practice, help, and tutoring; and makes attending class a priority for herself.  At the same time, she is exceedingly humble and grateful. Taylor is thoughtful to her classmates, expresses personal interest in the class community, and exhibits good manners and professional soft skills. Taylor was surprised and excited to be nominated and will represent our program well.”

Taylor was chosen by judges at a local competition recently held at the College. Samantha Smith, Dean for Adult Education at Ogeechee Tech stated, “I am so proud of all of my students, but for Taylor, having the distinction of being nominated as the EAGLE Delegate for OTC's Adult Education Program allows her to see that she is capable of so much more than even she could imagine. I believe that this is the push she needs that will help her achieve all of her goals.”

Riner said the Adult Education program at Ogeechee Tech is helping her gain self-confidence, self-discipline, social and professional skills, and a better understanding of math and grammar. She said, “These classes have challenged and stimulated me and given me a focus and a purpose.” Riner wants to continue her education and find her dream job in the hospitality and tourism field and she looks forward to using her enthusiasm for adult education to inspire others to reach their goals in life.
