Maritime Bethel Savannah to Recognize 2018 National Maritime Day

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Friday, May 11th, 2018

The Rotary Club of Savannah West, and the Maritime Bethel at Savannah Board of Directors, volunteer staff, and Chaplain Andy Krey invites the community to join the nonprofit organization for a luncheon observing National Maritime Day 2018. This luncheon will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 22 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel’s Harborside Room, 2 West Bay St. in downtown Savannah.

Each year National Maritime Day is observed on May 22. On this day, Americans remember those lost at sea, honor those who serve at sea, and remind the maritime industry that ships carry more than just cargo.

Columbus Marine Survey Captain Jerome Pereira will serve as the keynote speaker for this event. Following the luncheon, a memorial wreath will be cast during a special water-front tribute honoring the memories of seafarers lost at sea.

“Many people do not realize that 90% of everything Americans use arrives by ship,” said Chaplain Krey. “We are grateful to the Rotary Club for teaming up with us once again this year to recognize seafarers’ sacrifices and to Captain Pereira for joining us as the keynote speaker.”

The M.B.S. is a nonprofit faith-based organization that advocates for the safety, security, and well-being of the people of the sea. For over 35 years the M.B.S. has continued to meet the needs of over 78,000 seafarers who arrive at the Port of Savannah, far away from their home, each year.

Luncheon registration costs $30 per person. To reserve your spot, please mail your check payable to M.B.S. including your name, number of guests, and contact information to P.O. Box 884, Rincon, GA 31326. Please RSVP by Thursday, May 17.

The M.B.S. invites crews of ships in port on May 22 as guests to this luncheon and funds the meals for the Harbor Police, musicians, keynote speaker, and key volunteers. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to help the M.B.S. cover the costs of these guests, please mail a check payable to the M.B.S. at the address above.
