Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Wednesday, March 13th, 2019

Savannah is preparing to host its 195th St. Patrick’s Day celebration. The epic event draws about 400,000 revelers to the Hostess City annually, which is beneficial to the regional economy and tourism industry. However, it’s not always an easy scene to navigate – especially with a family in tow.

The City of Port Wentworth, located only 16 minutes from downtown Savannah, offers fun-seekers a handy alternative to paying top dollar for lodging in the historic district. With plenty of modern, newly built hotels conveniently located nearby, visitors have plenty of choices to keep their families comfortable. Plus, Port Wentworth’s easy shuttle service means those who opt for more affordable hotels outside of Savannah will have no problems making their way downtown for the parade and related festivities.

Shuttle services will be provided from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 16, departing from and returning to the Rice Creek School parking lot. The cost per person is $5 for a round trip. Visitors will be dropped at the downtown CAT station at 610 W. Oglethorpe St. The return trip uses the same locations. Shuttles will run every 45 minutes all day. For more information, call 912-964-4379.

Folding chairs and coolers are permitted on the shuttles. Security will patrol the pick-up and drop-off spots and will be stationed on the shuttle.

Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities on Saturday, March 16 will start with Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, followed by the legendary parade at 10:15 a.m. The celebration lasts all day in the historic district’s bars, restaurants and shops.
