The Salvation Army of Savannah (TSA) has received a generous donation of $20,000 from the Stewart Huston Charitable Trust to contribute to the urgently needed renovation of the roof of TSA’s Community Center on Savannah’s Bee Road.  

The roof of this 27-year-old building is in a serious condition of decay and is impacting on its future as a safe gathering place. During the pandemic, the community center was used as an additional shelter for homeless families and as an additional feeding center for children. The Community Center also serves as recreational space for TSA shelter residents and those in The Salvation Army’s free rehabilitation program which helps those facing the challenges of drug and alcohol abuse rise above their circumstances. The Community Center plays a vital role in many of the regular programs TSA provides for the community such as the after-school program that offers meals, tutoring, and recreational activities to children as well as a summer day camp, a senior citizen program and a chapel for worship services and Sunday school. The community center is also made available for the community to hold activities such as Zumba classes, karate, kickball, a music program for children to learn piano and more. The roof is just the first of many renovations that need to be made at the Community Center, but these funds will assist The Salvation Army in ensuring that it can continue to be a safe haven for those who need it most in our community.

“Whether it’s children gathered in a circle practicing their spelling words, teenagers playing a rousing game of basketball, parents having a class on personal finances, seniors enjoying doing some crafts with their friends, or a family pausing to thank God for the difference He is making in their life, our Bee Road Corps Community Center touches every aspect of what is great about the love and desire Savannah has to see it’s fellow citizens, some of whom might be facing challenges and adversities, make the very most of the life they have been blessed with. This is a place of faith that moves mountains of heartache and regret, hope for lives that are moving forward, and the love of friends that spans every division this world would throw at them,” said The Salvation Army of Savannah’s Major Paul Egan. “This generous gift made by the Trustees of the Stewart Huston Charitable Trust makes it possible for our continued use of this facility through the long-overdue replacement of our roofing system. If it were not for this funding, the critical programming that supports so many would be curtailed. The integrity of this facility is being restored and will continue to serve the community for many years to come.”

The local nonprofit offers services in adult rehabilitation, basic needs, emergency disaster relief, emergency financial assistance, housing and homeless services, hunger relief, and youth care. Donations like this from The Stewart Huston Charitable Trust will help The Salvation Army continue these vital services and provide support and much-needed help to for local individuals and families suffering significant economic and social hardship. 

The Salvation Army serves all 159 counties in Georgia and is uniquely positioned with 40 facilities that provide family emergency and sheltering assistance throughout out the state. TSA’s workers are local and have always been here for the community. In times of disaster, the organization will continue to be the last to leave to offer support and guidance on the front lines.
