Pooler Lions Club Charity Golf Tournament

Friday, April 30th, 2021

The Pooler Lions Club 6th Annual “Chipping for Charity” Golf Tournament will take place on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at Crosswinds Golf Club in Savannah.  This is the Club’s 6th charity tournament and we are grateful for the growing community support from local businesses.

Golf Chair Linda Saytanides stated, “All proceeds from the tournament go to benefit the Pooler Lions Club Charity Fund and support our work helping the blind and visually impaired.  Although Vision is one of our primary areas, we are also involved in the community with Environmental, Childhood Cancer, Diabetes, and Hunger service projects.  Where there is a need, there is a Lion.”

The Pooler Lions Club is excited to announce that we have filled the course at Crosswinds with 144 golfers.  We would like to thank our three Eagle Sponsors - The Greater Pooler Area Chamber of Commerce, Mitsubishi Power and Gastroenterology Consultants of Savannah and our four Birdie Sponsors - Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union, two Georgia Eye Institute specialists Dr. Judith Piros and Dr. William Degenhart and Michael’s Roofing.

Our business community has really stepped up in support with 49 businesses as Hole Sponsors and over 60 businesses giving items for the raffle and goody bags.  We have some exciting raffles all valued over $100.  We are also excited to have 15 area golf courses that donated golf certificates for prizes and raffle.

In the area of community service, the Pooler Lions Club is gearing up for its third Farmers to Families USDA food truck distribution planned for Friday, May 7.  Time and location to be announced soon.  Local residents can drive-through and receive a free box of food.

Other initiatives are providing free vision screenings in area schools throughout Chatham County –  over 16,000 students in 2018, over 18,000 in 2019 and over 80,000 since 2011 when we began screenings. Although COVID-19 restrictions have curtailed these efforts at the present time, Pooler Lions have found ways to give back to the community including financial support for college scholarships for graduating Pooler seniors.

At our Scholarship Awards Presentation held at our Meet & Greet on April 27th, we were pleased to have Congressman Buddy Carter join us in congratulating three students receiving a $1,000 scholarship and two students receiving at $250 scholarship.

Other areas Pooler Lions are involved include: purchasing supplies for local schools, American flags flown on Hwy 80 for patriotic holidays, hygiene kits and knitted scarves for the homeless, holiday cards delivered to local nursing home residents, YMCA Christmas Angel Project, Salvation Army, Pooler Police and Fire support, Lions Club International Foundation, GA Lions Lighthouse, GA Lions Camp, Southeastern Guide Dogs, Leader Dogs and Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry.  You will find Pooler Lions volunteering at Vision Screenings, USDA Food Distributions, Red Cross Blood Drives and as reading and math tutors in local schools.

Pooler Lions have served over 47,790 people, completed 109 service activities and served over 4,110 hours since the start of the Lions year beginning July 1, 2020.
