Telfair Museum will host a Juneteenth Free Family Day celebration on Saturday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Jepson Center, located at 207 W York St, Savannah, GA 31401. Local residents can enjoy free admission to the Jepson Center, as well as special programs centered around freedom and African American history and heritage.

The festivities will include special programming from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. beginning with drumming and a libation ceremony featuring Dr. Jamal Touré, followed by traditional arts demonstrations and hands-on activities for young people in the museum. The event will also celebrate Gullah Geechee heritage theme with a featured performance by the McIntosh County Shouters, renowned performing artists of the authentic ring shout. The ring shout is North America’s oldest living African American musical tradition, and part of the Gullah-Geechee culture formed by enslaved people brought from West Africa to the coastal regions of Georgia, Carolinas, and North Florida. The special performance is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Jepson Center.

“We are excited to honor African American history and heritage once again and encourage the community to celebrate with us on June 10 in advance of Juneteenth,” said Harry DeLorme – Telfair Museums Director of Education and Senior Curator.

Free Family Days at Telfair Museums allows residents from Chatham, Bryan, Effingham, Liberty, Bulloch, and Beaufort Counties free admission to enjoy and participate in gallery exploration and safe, educational activities designed for the entire family. These events are made possible by investment from the City of Savannah, the Georgia Council for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
