Groves ESOL Students Will Transition To Their Respective Home Schools Beginning September 5th

Staff Report

Friday, August 25th, 2023

Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools is proud to offer high quality educational experiences for all students.   While Groves serves as an English Language Learner (ELL) site for the District, we recognize the importance of providing the same services at neighborhood schools.   Through the District's work to improve our services and demonstrate a commitment to our English Language Learners, we have increased staffing levels at schools that demonstrated the greatest need.  As a result, we are pleased to provide students participating in the ELL program at Groves the opportunity to return to their home (zoned) school for teaching and learning.  This has become increasingly important as we work to balance high-capacity levels at Groves High School.

Identified students will return to their zoned school starting September 5, 2023, and should have received a letter from the school, and/or received an email or phone call explaining the change.*

Transportation will be provided, and all student schedules will be finalized before the transition.  A parent meeting will be held on August 30, 2023, at 6:00pm at Groves High School to provide additional information about this exciting opportunity and to answer any questions our families may have.

Additional English Language (EL) teacher positions were identified to be hired specifically for zoned schools to provide English Language instructional services for our ELL students.  Our current focus includes transitioning students to their zoned schools at:

  • New Hampstead High School

  • Windsor Forest High School

  • Jenkins High School

  • Beach High School

  • Johnson (Johnson and Savannah High combined)

This transition will offer improved educational experiences that uphold our commitment to safety and a positive leaning environment.  Our investment in additional EL staff will provide students a rich and rewarding high school experience that will ensure students are performing at their very best at their home school location.

We look forward to sharing more information with our families on August 30th at Groves High School at 6:00 p.m.  Should you have immediate questions, please call 912-395-2520.

*Students zoned for Groves High School who are receiving ESOL services will remain at Groves.  ESOL services will continue to be provided at Groves as your zone school.
