Each year, the news magazine U.S. News & World Report publishes a list of rankings for schools across the nation.  The organization's rankings of high schools, first published in 2007, are highly anticipated each year and in 2021, the publisher added rankings of elementary and middle schools to the magazine's repertoire.  This year's rankings for each were recently released.  The top five SCCPSS schools in this year's rankings are listed below with both their local and state ranking, along with the national ranking for high schools.

How U.S. News calculates the rankings:

ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE

The rankings use the same methodology for all included grade levels. For each state, schools were assessed on their shares of students who were proficient or above proficient in their mathematics and reading/language arts state assessments. Half of the formula assessed the scores themselves and the other half incorporated the test results in the context of socioeconomic demographics. In other words, the top-ranked schools are all high-achieving and have succeeded at educating all their students.

HIGH SCHOOLS

The highest ranked U.S. public schools in U.S. News & World Report's 2023-2024 Best High Schools rankings are those whose students demonstrated outstanding outcomes above expectations in math, reading and science state assessments, earned qualifying scores in an array of college-level exams, and graduated in high proportions.

The U.S. News and World Report methodology used to determine scores included summing the school's weighted scores across six indicators of school quality, then computing a single zero to 100 overall score reflective of a school's performance across these metrics. The overall scores depict how well each school did on a national percentile basis. For example, a school with a score of 60 performed in the 60th percentile among all schools in the rankings.
