Long-time St. Joseph’s/Candler leader Sr. Margaret Beatty has been named to the St. Joseph’s/Candler Board of Trustees.

The SJ/C Board of Trustees is made up of volunteers who guide the vision of the health system.

ABOUT SR. MARGIE BEATTY

Beatty served as the health system’s Vice President of Mission Services from 2001 to 2022. In that role she guided the system’s community outreach and grew small pilot initiatives in major health programs such as St. Mary’s Community Center, St. Mary’s Health Center and Good Samaritan Clinic.

Born in Bowleys Quarters near Baltimore, Md., she entered the religious life at 19 when she joined the Sisters of Mercy, an international community of Roman Catholic women who dedicate their lives to the Gospel of Jesus and take vows of poverty, chastity, obedience and service.

She earned an English Teaching Degree from Mount Saint Agnes College and then a Masters in English Literature from Marquette University.

Her first assignment was in Columbus, Ga., teaching English and religion at Pacelli High School. She then went back to Baltimore to teach at Mercy High School.

During that time she volunteered in the city jail as a chaplain to women, but that became her full-time job for eight years. She was one of the people to start the successful Marian House in Baltimore, a residence and training program for women getting out of jail, prison or psychiatric hospitals.

Beatty was elected to the provincial council of the Sisters of Mercy, which covered an area from Baltimore to Alabama. She served as president of the Province of Baltimore from 1982 to 2000.

She served on the Board of Trustees at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah, before the Joint Operating Agreement with Candler Hospital. She was named Vice President of Mission Services for St. Joseph’s/Candler in 2001.

During her time in Savannah she has served and given leadership to many different community organizations such as the Georgia Infirmary, MedBank Foundations, Inc., Mercy Housing, and Step-Up Savannah. She also serves on board of Mercy Hospital in Baltimore.
