Savannah Technical College Selected as National Finalist for Pre-Apprenticeship Adult Education Grant
Friday, January 22nd, 2021
Savannah Technical College Adult Education entered the Rethink Adult Education Challenge, a $750,000 competition to advance pre-apprenticeships. STC Adult Education has made it to the final round as one of only two in Georgia and one of the 95 national finalists in the challenge from a range of industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, and technology.
As a finalist, STC Adult Education will have access to digital resources — such as case studies, activities, and webinars with subject matter experts — to help develop their detailed pre-apprenticeship program proposal. The challenge will award $250,000 to the grand-prize winner, and up to five runners-up will each receive at least $100,000.
The STC Adult Education program entered this challenge to address the gap between student knowledge and skills, and the manufacturing knowledge and skills needed in Georgia’s coastal region. The New Road to Manufacturing Integrated Pre-Apprenticeship program will better prepare non-traditional adults for apprenticeships and manufacturing career opportunities by providing them with the English language and mathematics knowledge, safety, critical thinking, and hands-on manufacturing workplace skills. This will connect students to the college’s existing registered apprenticeship programs with area employers, new apprenticeship programs, and qualify them for open positions with area manufactures.
Savannah Tech’s Adult Education Program serves those who need to improve their basic literacy and math skills, improve their oral and written English, practice for the GED® test to attain a high school equivalency credential, and prepare for college. Instructors also help students with science and social studies test preparation for GED® testing. STC teaches adult education classes in the morning, afternoon, evening and online. They are offered in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham and Liberty Counties with multiple locations in each community.
Adult education classes for HSE and GED®-prep are currently free for all U.S. citizens. To register for free HSE-prep classes, call 912.443.5446 or visit www.savannahtech.edu/
