America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia kicked off a month-long push for turkeys with the 13^th Annual Drive Away Hunger golf tournament hosted by The Landings Deer Creek Club.  With the support of our amazing sponsors and golfers who joined us on Friday, November 3rd we are now able to purchase 2,276 turkeys, more than halfway to our goal of 4,000 turkeys for Thanksgiving.  The turkeys that we purchase are immediately made available to our non-profit partners that provide to the communities and neighbors that they serve.

The food insecurity rate in our service area of Coastal Georgia is greater than 11%, the equivalent of roughly 105,000 individuals who do not know how and when they will receive their next meal.  For Chatham County alone, 30,000 neighbors struggle with hunger.  “Food, fuel, and shelter are top necessities and all three are experiencing elevated costs due to supply chain issues and current economic situations, said Mary Jane Crouch, Executive Director, Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia.  Everyone needs nutritious food to thrive.  With the holidays approaching, we are reminded of so many who are less fortunate and struggling daily to just survive.  We are in the business of supplying food to those in need.  It is not a luxury but rather a necessity, no matter your financial situation.” 

Without the support of the community, Second Harvest would not be able to provide for our neighbors in need.  The holidays are a time to gather at the table, with family and friends, share a wholesome, hearty meal, and give thanks.  With every $10 donation, we can purchase turkeys that will warm the hearts and fill the tables of 4,000 families and individuals.  There are many ways you can get involved and lend a helping hand, from hosting a food drive, donating online, or supporting one of these partner events that will support our push to purchase turkeys.  Donate online to provide a turkey at www.helpendhunger.org.
