Meet Mely: A Story of Resilience and Hope
Tuesday, December 10th, 2024
Mely, a sophomore at Georgia Gwinnett College majoring in psychology, is a true example of resilience and transformation. Entering foster care at 11, she faced the challenges of living in multiple group homes and foster placements, all while grappling with the uncertainty of life without a permanent family. When Mely began college, the challenges didn’t stop—her first year was overwhelming, and she struggled academically. Without a support system to guide her, she felt lost and unsure of how to move forward. But Mely refused to give up.
Everything changed when Mely discovered the Fostering Success Act. Through the program, she received vital resources like transportation, school supplies, and the support of a life coach who believed in her. This second chance gave her the tools to rebuild her confidence and focus on her goals. With determination and the right support, Mely turned her story around. Today, she’s thriving, earning straight A’s, and staying involved in campus organizations celebrating her cultural heritage and aspirations. Mely’s journey is proof that the right support can transform even the toughest obstacles into opportunities for success.
Mely’s story is an inspiring reminder of how the Fostering Success Act changes lives. The program allows Georgia taxpayers to redirect their state taxes to support foster youth like Mely, providing essential resources that cost taxpayers nothing but mean everything to these young adults. As Mely puts it, “We are the future.” Together, we can empower that future. Learn more at fosteringsuccessact.org.
