City Issued Record Level of Building Construction Permits in 2024

Last year, the total value of building construction permitted by the City of Savannah was valued at $930 million representing a 5.6 percent increase in total valuation from 2023 and exceeding the previous record of $909 million set in 2022.

The City’s Development Services Department also saw a record level of new residential building construction, with a total construction cost valuation of $250 million with 1,054 permits issued in 2024. 

The previous record of $164 million for new residential construction was set in 2023.  Between 2012 and 2023, annual new residential construction permit valuation averaged around $84 million a year. Commercial permits issued in 2024 reached a total valuation of $371 million, down from last year’s total of $470 million. 

“Savannah is growing. That’s clear in our day-to-day experience and clear in our data,” City Manager Joseph A. Melder said. “We think the historic growth in new residential construction is especially positive. As we move through this era of growth, our priority is to create a great quality of life for all residents and businesses now and in the future.” 

New residential construction permits included 817 single-family homes (detached); 582 multifamily/apartment units; 169 single-family homes (attached/townhomes); 20 two-family homes (duplex); 43 accessory dwelling units; and 5 master home plans, mobile units and modular units.

Overall, the City issued a record 4,749 construction permits in 2024, exceeding last year’s count of 4,252 and is the highest volume seen since 2018.
