For nearly 160 years, the Y has been listening and responding to communities, bringing people together, and connecting people of all ages and backgrounds to bridge the gaps in community needs. Since the early 1940s, the West Broad Street YMCA has had a local presence and global reach, mobilizing the community to effect lasting, meaningful change.
AT&T has awarded a new Connected Learning Center (CLC) to the West Broad Street YMCA in Savannah to provide internet access and high quality educational, digital, and navigational tools and resources to residents. As a part of this award, AT&T will also make a $50,000 contribution to the club.
“The Connected Learning Center from AT&T will make an immediate and lasting impact on the children and families we serve at the West Broad YMCA,” said Joseph Bell, Chairman of the West Broad Street YMCA Board of Directors. “With access to the latest technology, our youth will be better equipped to excel in school, develop important digital skills, and build a brighter future for themselves. This will also close the digital divide though having available internet accessibility.”
“At AT&T, we are committed to helping close the digital divide and connecting Georgians with the resources needed to thrive. We are proud to collaborate with the West Broad Street YMCA to bring an AT&T Connected Learning Center to the Savannah community,” said Riley Blount, President, AT&T Georgia. “The Connected Learning Center will provide a safe, dedicated space where Savannah youth and families can access digital tools, complete homework, participate in workforce skills training and discover new possibilities that set them on a path to success.”
The barrier to internet access or the connected devices needed to fully participate in the online world is an issue known as the digital divide. According to Pew Research, nearly 40 million Americans lack access to home broadband internet, underscoring the vital role CLCs play in communities across the country by providing the technology and connectivity.
This CLC is one of one of eight in Georgia. Since 2021, AT&T has opened 64 CLCs across 19 states, serving a reported 64,000 nationwide. In response to demands for these centers, AT&T plans to open at least 100 by 2027.
This effort is part of AT&T’s initiative to help address the digital divide through internet accessibility, affordability and safe adoption. AT&T has committed $5 billion to help 25 million people get and stay connected to high-speed internet by 2030.
