Savannah Technical College (Savannah Tech), the premier provider of career-ready technical education and workforce development in Coastal Georgia, and Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) are proud to announce the launch of an apprenticeship program designed to give students hands-on experience in advanced manufacturing while earning college credits. This collaboration underscores Savannah Tech’s commitment to workforce development and HMGMA’s focus on building a future-ready team.

“At Savannah Tech, we are committed to empowering our students with the skills, knowledge, and mentorship necessary to thrive in high-demand industries,” said Dr. Ryan W. Foley, President of Savannah Technical College. “This program not only prepares individuals for successful careers but it also strengthens our local economy by cultivating a highly skilled and future-ready workforce. We are honored to be a part of this innovative partnership that will deliver lasting benefits to our community.”

The 18-month apprenticeship with HMGMA’s Equipment Maintenance Department is set to begin in June. Apprentices will work alongside experienced maintenance professionals – known as Meta Pros – who are responsible for supporting the technical operations of HMGMA’s stamp, welding, paint and general assembly shops. Their responsibilities include maintaining and troubleshooting equipment across these critical production areas.

Participants will receive comprehensive hands-on training in both electrical and mechanical systems, including hydraulics, pneumatics and gearing. Apprentices will split their time each week between classroom instruction at Savannah Tech (two days a week) and practical, on-site experience at the Metaplant (three days a week). Each apprentice will be paired with a dedicated mentor to guide their development through the program.

“This apprenticeship initiative represents a pivotal step in workforce development for our region,” said Tal Loos, Vice President for Economic Development for Savannah Technical College. “By collaborating with Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America, we are creating an unparalleled opportunity for students to gain invaluable hands-on experience in advanced manufacturing while earning academic credentials.

Apprentices are compensated throughout the program with a starting wage of $20.40/hour and bi-annual raises, alongside full employee benefits such as health insurance, 401(k) options, and exclusive employee discounts. Upon successful completion, apprentices will earn a diploma in Industrial Maintenance Systems Technology and transition into full-time employment with HMGMA’s Equipment Maintenance Department.

“Through this program, we are building the workforce we need by investing in the local community and equipping people with the skills and knowledge necessary to support our cutting-edge manufacturing environment,” said Brent Stubbs, Chief Administrative Officer at HMGMA. “Partnering with Savannah Tech made perfect sense due to their long-standing track record of supporting similar programs with key industry leaders in the area. We’re excited to welcome the first group of apprentices and look forward to the long-term impact this initiative will have in our community.”

Applications for the apprenticeship are now open. Interested candidates can apply online at Maintenance Team Member (Apprenticeship) Job Details | Hyundai Motor Company. Applicants must be within two years of graduating high school and meet all pre-employment requirements. A total of eight apprentices will be selected for the inaugural class.
