Community leaders and officials gathered yesterday, Sept. 17, to kick off the campaign to renew Chatham County's Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). This county-wide November 4 referendum will continue the existing 1% sales tax to generate an estimated $700 million over six years for critical improvements across Chatham County.

The proposed projects were developed with extensive public input and will address long-standing needs in flood reduction, road improvements, and public safety. Speakers at the press conference included Chatham County Chairman Chester A. Ellis, Savannah Mayor Van R. Johnson II, and representatives from municipalities including Mayor Brian West of Tybee Island and Mayor Bruce Campbell of Garden City.

"SPLOST has transformed our community since the mid-1980s, funding projects that improve quality of life for all residents," said Jim Collins, a local business leader and Chair of Citizens for Progress Committee. "This new round will continue that legacy, with more than 40% of the funds expected to come from visitors, reducing the burden on local taxpayers."

If approved, SPLOST 8 would fund a diverse range of projects throughout the county and its municipalities. Key projects include:

  • Critically needed drainage and stormwater projects to reduce flooding

  • Road improvements and projects to reduce traffic congestion

  • Supporting Early Childhood Learning Centers

  • Funding for Police & Fire Departments to make our neighborhoods safer

  • Improving pedestrian safety & traffic calming

Early voting for the November 4, 2025 referendum will begin October 14. Residents are encouraged to learn more by visiting voteyessplost.com.
