Savannah State Celebrates Historic $42.8M Funding Boost for Campus Transformation, Student Success Projects

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Thursday, May 28th, 2026

Savannah State University President Dr. Jermaine Whirl, joined by members of the Chatham County Legislative Delegation, announced a historic $42.8 million state appropriation investment that will support transformative campus facility improvements focused on student wellness, engagement, and long-term student success.

The funding will support critical infrastructure upgrades and the continued advancement of the university’s Student Wellness and Engagement Facilities Project — a major initiative to modernize aging campus facilities and create vibrant, student-centered spaces that strengthen the overall student experience.

“This historic investment reflects what is possible when leaders across the region and state come together with a shared commitment to student success and the future of higher education,” said Whirl. “We are sincerely grateful to the Chatham County Legislative Delegation for their strong advocacy and continued partnership, especially Senator Derek Mallow for helping lead this effort on behalf of Savannah State University. We also extend our appreciation to Governor Brian Kemp, Lt. Governor Burt Jones, Speaker Jon Burns, Chairman Blake Tillery, Chancellor Sonny Perdue, the University System of Georgia (USG) Board of Regents (BOR), District 1 Regent Patrick Jones, BOR Chairman David Dove, USG system office staff and SSU students, staff, faculty and alumni for their support of this transformational initiative. This investment will allow us to continue advancing student wellness, engagement, and campus improvements that will impact generations of Tigers to come.”

The Student Wellness and Engagement Facilities Project includes plans to expand student support services and create new wellness-focused facilities designed to better serve current and future generations of Tigers.

“This historic investment strengthens not only Savannah State University, but the future workforce, economy, and vitality of the Savannah-Chatham region,” said Whirl. “Today marks another major step forward in building a stronger future for our students and our community.”
