Local high school students recently celebrated the completion of their Summer 500 experience, marking the end of several weeks spent gaining hands-on skills in workplaces across Savannah.

Through the program, students were matched with paid positions that introduced them to a wide range of career paths. Participating employers represented fields such as engineering, hospitality, customer service, public libraries, and other sectors throughout the community.

Summer 500 is made possible through a collaborative effort involving the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce, the City of Savannah, Chatham County, and the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System. Together, the partners help connect students with employers and provide early exposure to workplace expectations.

Alderwoman at Large Carol Bell emphasized the value of introducing professional skills before students enter adulthood.

“At 16 and 17, they’re learning adult skills that some of our adults have not mastered,” Bell said.

Organizers plan to offer Summer 500 again next year, creating more opportunities for students to explore careers, earn income, and prepare for life after high school. Students interested in participating are encouraged to apply as soon as applications open.
