Mayor Van Johnson Represents Savannah on Global Stage, Signs Friendship Agreement with Dunkerque, France
Wednesday, October 28th, 2026
Savannah Mayor Van R. Johnson, II, recently represented the City of Savannah in Geneva, Switzerland, participating in two international gatherings focused on how cities are addressing some of today’s most pressing challenges.
Johnson participated in the United Nations Forum of Mayors’ Sixth Meeting as one of only two United States mayors participating in sessions focused on “Cities Delivering for a Sustainable Future.” Additionally, he served as a speaker and presenter at the World Economic Forum Urban Transformation Summit, joining discussions on “Investing in Resilient Regions” and “Scaling Innovation.” Johnson highlighted Savannah’s Recreation Reimagined initiative as an example of local investment in recreation, neighborhoods and young people strengthening communities and improving quality of life.
“Savannah continues to earn a seat at important tables around the world,” said Johnson. “But being at the table is not enough. The goal is to bring home ideas, relationships and opportunities that benefit the people we serve. Leading globally. Serving locally.”
During the visit, Johnson also met with Mayor Patrice Vergriete and signed a Friendship Agreement between the City of Savannah and the City of Dunkerque, France.
The relationship, in development for nearly two years, is intended to create opportunities for the two cities to exchange ideas, strengthen institutional relationships, and identify areas for future collaboration. Full-scale delegation visits between Savannah and Dunkerque are anticipated in 2027.
“The signing is not the accomplishment,” Johnson continued. “What we do with the relationship is what matters. We want to turn relationships into real opportunities for Savannah.”
Johnson thanked Valerie Kuhn Granzow, French Honorary Consul in Savannah, Savannah City Manager Jay Melder, Faye DiMassimo and MarRonde Lumpkin-Lotson for their assistance and support in advancing Savannah’s international relationships.
