Armstrong State University’s Economic Monitor Reports Mostly Good News for Q3 for Region

Armstrong State University’s latest Coastal Empire Economic Monitor reports mostly positive news, even as the Savannah-metro economy hit the pause button during the third quarter of 2015. Solid gains in total employment and consumer confidence were offset by dips in port activity, retail sales and air travel. Electricity and hotel sales effectively were flat, along with the coincident index of economic activity for the region.

Two weeks ago I traveled to Savannah to attend the annual State of the Port address and tour Savannah’s Garden City terminal. The Port has been a political success story for years. Most of the recent narrative has been focused on the 15-year journey to secure permits and funding to dredge and deepen the Savannah River. This is necessary to accommodate bigger ships that will soon be able to pass through an upgraded Panama Canal. Perhaps lost in this story has been the rapid growth the port has already experienced on its ascension to becoming a world-class player.

The BigWig Campaign is being launched with a goal of raising a minimum of $10,000 to fund local breast cancer patient services and education programs. The campaign will run from Sept. 15 through Oct. 31.

Gains were strongly supported by port activity, retail sales, regional employment and the U.S. coincident index of economic activity, despite marginal dips into electricity sales and consumer confidence throughout the southern Atlantic states.
