Chatham County Voters OK New SPLOST
Wednesday, November 6th, 2013
Chatham County voters decided they haven’t had enough of SPLOST just yet and have approved extending the 1-percent sales tax for another six years, after supporting the tax referendum six times since 1985.
About 56 percent of the ballots cast were in support of the extension, with all 89 precincts reporting Tuesday evening.
Despite some missteps along the way, voters decided to give the city of Savannah the benefit of the doubt Tuesday. With the approval of SPLOST, up to $120 million is expected to be raised for a new arena that has not yet been clearly defined.
Combined with about $20 million from the current taxing period, city officials say there will be enough funding raised by the tax’s next cycle to construct the arena this time around.
