Keystone XL Oil Pipeline Clears Significant Hurdle

Monday, February 3rd, 2014

TransCanada welcomes the U.S. Department of State’s Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS). This concludes the longest and most exhaustive environmental review of any pipeline project in the history of North America. The State Department’s Final SEIS (PDF, 4 MB) — and four previous environmental impact statements written over the past five years containing over 15,000 pages of scientific research – all reached a similar conclusion: Keystone XL would have minimal impact on the environment, will create thousands of much-needed jobs and will bolster U.S. energy security.

What this report shows is that Keystone XL is not about energy versus the environment; it’s about where Americans want to get the oil they need to keep U.S. refineries full and producing products we all rely on every day.

“The environmental analysis of Keystone XL released today once again supports the science that this pipeline would have minimal impact on the environment,” said Russ Girling, TransCanada’s president and chief executive officer.  “The next step is making a decision on a Presidential Permit for Keystone XL.  I believe that this project continues to be in the national interest of the United States for two main reasons: supporting U.S. energy security and the thousands of jobs our multi-billion dollar project will create.”

No stone has been left unturned, no environmental question left unanswered. The diligence has been done and the message is clear, Keystone XL is the right choice for the environment, it’s the right choice for public safety and it’s the right choice for the United States.
