Friday, February 14th, 2014

The state of Georgia is planning to build a $10 million facility in northwest Georgia to train workers for jobs at Volkswagen's Chattanooga manufacturing plant and its suppliers.

The Technical College System of Georgiaintends to build a new facility to teach automated manufacturing technology on the campus of Georgia Northwestern Technical College in Ringgold, Ga. It's now seeking a general contractor for the project, whose construction costs are estimated to be $9.2 million to $10.1 million.

The firm Pieper O’Brien Herr Architects is designing the project. Construction is expected to begin in late May 2014 and be completed within 12 months.

The area around the new facility has lost many manufacturing jobs. Volkswagen's 1.9 million-square-foot manufacturing facility, which opened in April 2011, is less than 10 miles from the site of the new facility.
