IKEA Distribution Center Adds Workers, Increases Deliveries

It’s one of the cruel ironies of living near the fourth busiest container port in the United States — an 800,000-square-foot IKEA global distribution center packed full of stylish home furnishings is off limits to the thousands of nearby residents in need of a new futon or chair.

What’s worse? No Swedish meatballs.

The Oz-like blue and yellow industrial beacon, tucked away in Port Wentworth, is only getting fuller, according to distribution center manager William Jackson, who led a tour of the facility earlier this month.

“Our center is close to 85 percent full right now,” he told members of the Savannah/Hilton Head Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.
