Students at Hancock Day School proudly participated in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Pennies for Patients program, one of LLS’s national School & YouthSM Programs that raises money to find cures for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma while providing information and support services to patients and their families.
Pennies for Patients teaches students caring, sharing, respect for others and the value of community service, in addition to supporting an important cause. The need for cures is critical: a little over one million Americans are battling blood cancers, and leukemia remains the leading cause of disease-related death among children under 20.
Students at Hancock Day School raised $3,016.17 to help LLS advance its mission to find cures. Led by the third grade teachers and students, Hancock Day School was able to engage the school in giving back by holding fun days such as Sock It To Cancer Day (Crazy Sock Day) and Team Up To Fight Cancer Day (Team Jersey Day). They surpassed their fundraising goal for this year with the top three classes being Ms. Thomas’, Mrs. Moody’s and Ms. Henderson’s. This is Hancock Day School’s second year participating in Pennies for Patients.
In 2012-2013, more than 750 Georgia schools raised $664,000, and joined 25,000 schools across the country in raising $21 million through School & Youth Programs.
“It was so inspiring to see the Hancock Day School students volunteer and really care about helping others,” said Lindsay Blackmon, Georgia Chapter Sr. Campaign Manager. “It’s a program that is truly meaningful for them because leukemia is a disease that impacts children, and the students learn that they can really make a difference. The students at Hancock Day School help show us what Pennies for Patients is all about by being passionate about giving back and making a difference in the lives of others.
