SSU Announces New VP for Student Affairs

Savannah State University (SSU) President Cheryl D. Dozier has named F. Carl Walton, Ph.D., as vice president for Student Affairs effective July 7, 2014.
As vice president and member of the president’s executive leadership team, Walton will provide governance for various units – counseling & disability services, career placement, residential life, student life, health services, student judicial process, intramural sports & wellness, student government – to integrate academic and student development programs and activities.
Walton comes to SSU from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania where he worked for 10 years, first as professor of political science and director of the Honors Program before transitioning to the chief of Student Affairs role in 2010. As the chief administrator for student affairs programming, Walton established the Summer Academic Enrichment Program for high school juniors and seniors, launched a parents association, transitioned residence halls into learning communities and revamped New Student Orientation Week to increase academic connections. He began his academic career at the University of Georgia as an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science and later served as a faculty member at his alma mater, Morris Brown College, where he also served as coordinator for New Student Orientation.
“I am excited about joining Savannah State to make the educational experience and climate meaningful and positive for the diverse student body,” said Walton.
Walton, who earned both his master’s degree and doctor of philosophy degree in political science from Purdue University, has authored and co-authored several publications that focus on politics and the civil rights era.
