Beachview Bed and Breakfast formerly known as Bordley Cottage/ Beachview Hotel, located on Tybee Island, Chatham County, Georgia was listed in the National Register of Historic Places June 27, 2014 as an excellent example of an early Tybee cottage that was later converted to a four-seasons hotel.
Beachview Bed and Breakfast is a two story building located on Butler Ave at 17th Street. Built in 1915 by Charles R. Bordley, an officer in the Savannah Guano Company, as a private residence. After his death, his widow Ophelia Bordley Wallis opened the home in 1932 as a boarding house. This was the first boarding house on the island with running water to all the rooms. Beachview Bed and Breakfast is one of the oldest surviving hotels on Tybee Island.
In 1944, William and Mary Garvin purchased the and transform the cottage into a four season Hotel, called the Beachview Hotel. They added two fireplaces, two story Brick porches and glass block entrance which all stand today. The Beachview provided middle class patrons with up to date seaside accommodations.
In 2011, Karen Kelly purchased the building, which was known as the Hunter House Inn and Restaurant. Karen along with her husband Frank Kelly began the extensive renovation transforming the home into an upscale Bed and Breakfast.
The building has been extensively renewed making every effort to preserve the Historic fabric. The Kelly’s began rebuilding from the ground up including; reinforcing footings, new floor joist, subflooring, hurricane clips and all electric, plumbing, heating and cooling systems. Also insulation, storm windows and bathroom fixtures have been installed to conserve energy and improve comfort. The 100 year old heart pine floors were lifted up, cleaned and then reinstalled. The color on the walls is original as is the color on the exterior.
