Tuesday, September 9th, 2014

Parker’s, this year’s sponsor of Picnic in the Park, announced today that Ralph and Kerri Morris of Statesboro were the winners of this year’s contest to choose a theme.  The Morris’ were one of hundreds of contestants to suggest a theme for the Picnic in the Park event which is set to take place in Forsyth Park on Sunday, October 5. The couple was the inspiring voice behind the whimsical theme, “Fly Me to the Moon”, a romantic song by famous cabaret singer Marbel Mercer and then later by Johnny Mathis.

The winners will be this year’s guests of honor and have their own VIP picnic area. Mrs. Morris stated that she was ecstatic to find out they won the contest and quickly indicated they were entering to win the grand prize for Best Picnic.  She added, “Wow, I still can’t believe we won. I love Parker’s convenience stores!”

The contest will take place on Sunday, October 5. Registration begins at 3:00 p.m. Contestants are asked to create a picnic around the theme, “Fly Me to the Moon” and are encouraged to design a creative picnic spread inspired by elegance, luminescence, and romance. All picnics will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Originality
  • Creativity
  • Most importantly; the best reflection of this year’s theme

Participants will be required to check in at the Parker’s Picnic Registration Tent.  Each registered picnic contestant or group will receive a helium balloon with a number, along with the official entry form.  Judging for the contest will start at 5:00 p.m. Those who enter their spreads in the picnic contest will be eligible to win Parker’s cash.  This year we will have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.  The grand prize winner will receive $1,000.00 in Parker’s cash.  The winning picnics will be announced during the intermission around 7:55 p.m.
