Savannah Technical College will host the first CAMINO: ABC - Adults Back to College Night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Thursday, October 23, 2014, in the Eckburg Auditorium (5717 White Bluff Road, Savannah, 31405). Registration begins at 5:30PM.
Adults of all ages attend college - whether for the first time or to retrain for a new career. At this event, participants will hear from adults who have found success at Savannah Technical College with sessions and informational booths to engage families in learning activities to prepare them for college admissions, financial aid application and scholarship options. The program is free and open to the public. Information on private scholarships will also be made available to students, regardless of residency status. For more information or to register, contact Lescia Gonzalez at (912) 443-4092 or [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>.
This event is sponsored through the tri-branch efforts of CAMINO (College Access Mentoring Information and Outreach) Collaborative. CAMINO aims to double the number of Latino students matriculating at Armstrong State University, Savannah State University and Savannah Technical College to 6.4% by 2015.
According to the 2010 census, the Hispanic American population in Georgia experienced the largest increase in the nation: nearly 400%. The CAMINO program is centered on Latino communities in the four Southeast Georgia counties that surround Savannah: Chatham, Liberty, Tattnall, and Toombs counties. This area has a total population of approximately 26,000 Latinos, representing an average of 6.84% of the total population in the four counties.
