Historic Carpenter to Lead Wood Sash Window Workshop for STC Visiting Artisan Series

Savannah Technical College will host its Historic Preservation Visiting Artisan series featuring Amy McAuley, the week of November 2 - 8, 2014.
McAuley will work with STC Historic Preservation students teaching how to make wood sash windows without power tools throughout the week.
She will lead a public workshop, Traditional Wood Sash Windows, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on November 8 at the Historic Preservation lab on STC’s Savannah Campus (5717 White Bluff Road). The $30 workshop will cover construction techniques of historic wood sash windows and has a limited enrollment.
McAuley is the owner of Oculus Fine Carpentry, Inc. Started in 2002, Oculus specializes in the conservation of historic windows and doors. Notable projects include the Pioneer Courthouse, Fort Dalles, Heceta Head Lighthouse, and Yaquina Head Lighthouse. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon, one year of post baccalaureate work in architecture at Portland State University and 17 years of on-the-job experience in historic structures. Her emphasis is in working with traditional tools and techniques to conserve and build sash for historic structures. In Oregon she focuses on 19th and early 20th century buildings. She has demonstrated widely across the US and in Canada. She also teaches yearly at the Pacific Northwest Field School run by the University of Oregon.
STC’s Visiting Artisan series is the first effort of its kind at any of Georgia’s technical colleges, bringing world-class craftsmen to campus for a week throughout the year.
Savannah Technical College has the only public hands-on preservation program in the state. The program has gained international recognition and has contributed to a number of community-based preservation projects in the surrounding communities. The program is the cornerstone of new instructional programs in Green Building Technology, which focuses on a comprehensive view of systems and efficiencies in construction.
