The Meals on Wheels program of Senior Citizens, Inc. recently received 800 boxes of sweet treats from local candy company River Street Sweets to deliver to clients for the holiday season.

“River Street Sweets is pleased to be able to bring a little holiday joy to the Meals on Wheels clients with this candy,” said Jennifer Strickland, owner of River Street Sweets. “We support Senior Citizens, Inc.’s mission of helping people age successfully and value our partnership with them.”

Eight hundred boxes filled with pralines and bear claws from the well-known candy company were donated as a special treat for Meals on Wheels clients of Senior Citizens, Inc. Through its Meals on Wheels program, Senior Citizens, Inc. delivers more than 1,800 hot, nutritionally balanced meals each day to seniors throughout a five-county area of coastal Georgia.

“We are so fortunate to have support from businesses like River Street Sweets. Programs like Meals on Wheels rely heavily on donations and community support and we appreciate everything our volunteers and our community does for us,” said Patti Lyons, executive director of Senior Citizens, Inc.

It takes just $6 a day to provide a hot, nutritious meal to a homebound senior, yet more than 700 seniors, at or below the Federal poverty line, await nutrition support in Chatham County alone. Georgia ranks sixth on Meals On Wheels Association of America's “Top Ten Hunger States” list, based on a recently released research study, with nearly one in every 12 seniors in Georgia being at risk of hunger.
