Community Lecture & Lunch to Feature Johns Hopkins’ Renowned Palliative Care Expert

Hospice Savannah, Inc. & The Steward Center for Palliative Care’s 7th Annual Lecture Series will feature Thomas J. Smith, MD, the Harry J. Duffey Family Professor of Palliative Medicine, and Director of Palliative Medicine with Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore, MD.
The public is warmly invited to attend a community lecture and complimentary lunch on Friday, January 30 at 12 noon funded by Bart Meyer & Company and the Endowment Fund of the Georgia Medical Society. A witty and engaging speaker, Dr. Smith has entitled his talk, “Things no one wants to think about, but should: The advantages of advance care planning,” or, “How I taught my nephew how to make my special peach cobbler.”
As a passionate pioneer in this relatively young board-certified specialty of palliative care, Dr. Smith advocates for open and honest communication with patients, setting medically appropriate goals, and offering the best symptom management. He provides evidence-based research to show how early access to hospice and palliative care actuallyextendslife, and through honest and engaging discussion shares practical tools to deal with difficult physician-patient conversations.
